AGERPRES announced a 7.5 million lei funding agreement to digitise its historical archive. The goal is to preserve materials and make them available to the public, researchers and institutions.
The archive holdings include photographic and documentary materials of historical interest. Digitisation aims both to protect physical media and to ease consultation for public, educational and research purposes.
Success will depend on selection, metadata quality, preservation standards and legal access conditions, not only scanning. Without clear metadata and access rules, digitisation alone does not guarantee public usefulness.
The funding announcement marks the start of the project, not its completion. Timetables, volumes processed and concrete consultation arrangements should be followed in later statements from the agency.
For Romania’s media heritage, a digitised archive can support journalism, education and research, provided that usage rights are respected and documented.
Until operational details are published, the 7.5 million lei figure should be read as the value of the funding agreement, not as a measure of results already delivered.
