Thousands of young people gathered on Saturday, 17 October 2026, outside Albania’s Education Ministry in Tirana, the fifth consecutive day of a student-led movement calling for Prime Minister Edi Rama to resign. The Times of India, citing Reuters, said a group of masked youths threw rocks at riot police. Officers answered with stun grenades, tear gas and a water cannon.

Protests over alleged corruption and a shortage of jobs have spread across Albania. During the week in Tirana, demonstrators smashed windows, set government buildings on fire and clashed with police, Reuters reported. Police figures put detentions at about 500 so far, of whom 330 were later released. Authorities recorded injuries to about 120 officers and 45 demonstrators; protester injuries may be under-counted.

Detention is not conviction. The figures are police tallies, not sentences. Rama, in office since 2013, won a fourth term last year. He denies wrongdoing and told Reuters earlier in the week that he would not step down.

On Saturday, on Facebook, he said the government respected students and would protect their right to protest, but that his responsibility was “even clearer” now: to protect citizens, guarantee justice and move Albania towards EU membership by 2030. Albania, with Montenegro, is among the Western Balkan front-runners.

Months of unrest were also fuelled by a luxury coastal resort plan involving investors including Jared Kushner. Villagers told Reuters in July their land had been wrongly sold. Reuters wrote that the land seller was wanted by prosecutors on drug-trafficking suspicion — denied by his lawyer — and found no evidence of wrongdoing by Kushner.

The student movement has overlapped with the “flamingo” protests against the government. This article describes a day of clashes and a police tally, not a political outcome and not a conviction.
