Northern Territory Police said on Wednesday that an 18-year-old man had been charged with dangerous driving causing death, five months after an alleged hit-and-run. The victim, a 57-year-old man, died on Len Kittle Drive in Alice Springs. The charges are not a conviction.

A police spokesperson said, in an afternoon statement, that the young man was arrested today at Alice Springs police station. He was also charged with hit-and-run and with other offences tied to the fatal crash. He has been remanded in custody to appear on Thursday, 22 October, at Alice Springs Local Court.

Police had previously said the 57-year-old was found unresponsive on Len Kittle Drive at about 21:30 on 20 May, with head injuries consistent with a vehicle strike. Wednesday’s statement adds that the victim received catastrophic injuries and died at the scene. The precise point of impact, described a week later from dashcam footage, is not part of today’s charging announcement.

The inquiry ran for five months. The Major Crash Investigation Unit arrested him at the station. The statement speaks of a coordinated effort by specialist units across the Territory and thanks those who came forward. The investigation, police write, is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call 131 444 or Crime Stoppers.

Eighteen is adulthood in Australia. Neither the police statement nor ABC names the accused or the victim. An open file is not a verdict. The local court in Alice Springs has not yet ruled.
