The BBC has said that from spring 2027 the linear services BBC Scotland, BBC Three and BBC Radio 4 Extra will close. Dump derStandard, 21 October, after APA. The staff announcement: 20 October, on the BBC media centre. Linear channels going, not the BBC closing.
Director-general Matt Brittin, in the staff note quoted by the BBC: every pound must work harder; cost pressure; a changing world; tough choices. The content, he says, will still be found where audiences already watch and listen, on iPlayer and Sounds.
The media centre: BBC Scotland remains a channel on iPlayer; programmes also on BBC One and BBC Two in Scotland. BBC Three: commissions, with more money for younger audiences, on iPlayer and YouTube. Radio 4 Extra: on BBC Sounds; the Daily Service also on local radio. Much of it, not all of it.
The savings target: £500 million by 2028. derStandard: ten percent of spending, €596 million. Two wordings on the same target. BBC News, also on 20 October: further cuts, announced by Rachel Jupp; the detail, next year. Not the same package as the three channels.
derStandard: dozens of posts cut. The Scotland-channel media centre: about 10 posts now, on top of 60 already announced earlier this year. Two counts. Consultation with teams and unions, not a redundancy already carried out.
The Scottish news programme Reporting Scotland: News at Seven will not move to iPlayer; it stops with the linear channel. The rest of BBC Scotland’s news offer remains, after the Scotland-channel media-centre note. Dump derStandard. The rewrite rests on derStandard and the BBC media centre.
