Bianca Raicu took bronze in cadet women's épée in Budapest. She lost the semi-final, 10-15, to America's Morgan Hankins. This is not a senior European title and it is not gold. It is third place at the first stage of the cadet European circuit, in the Hungexpo halls.
She entered the tableau in the second round. She beat Austria's Sophia Beubler 15-14, then America's Ava Beaver. In the fourth round she won 15-11 against Poland's Hanna Ciborowska. In the last 16 she beat Denisa Crișan, also Romanian, on a golden touch, the Satu Mare site Dincolo de Sport reports. Then 15-12 against Switzerland's Lena Paku Nemeth and 12-11 against America's Caroline Li in the quarter-finals.
The Romanian Fencing Federation posted the run on Facebook. Digi Sport repeated it on Monday. The coaches named are Ștefan Puiu and Ovidiu Pîrvuleasa. Raicu is from LPS Craiova. Johanna Kurtinecz, of CSM Olimpia Satu Mare, finished seventh after 11-15 in the quarters to Michelle Wu.
In the team event Romania (Raicu, Johanna Kurtinecz, Júlia Kurtinecz, Denisa Crișan) lost the quarter-final to Hungary 41-45 and took fifth, 45-34 over Germany, after a medical withdrawal by the United States. Fifth is not a medal.
On Sunday evening, also in Budapest, the Romanian cadet men's sabre team took gold, 45-44 over Hungary, in the Mate-Huniber Cup. That is another event, another sex, another weapon. It is not Bianca's bronze.
The cadet circuit is a youth stage, with hundreds of fencers. It does not, by itself, make an Olympic place. Until a senior result, the Hungexpo medal remains cadet bronze, épée, third place.
