A water scooter capsized overnight Friday into Saturday 17 October 2026 off Mørkved in Bodø. Two people went into the water. A woman swam about 200 metres to shore in cold water and air, in the dark. A man in his late 30s, from the Salten area, is still missing. Police have not found him.

A neighbour called around 02:30 after hearing cries from the shoreline. When crews arrived the woman was severely hypothermic, inside a heated office by the sea that happened to be open. She said she had been out with an acquaintance to test the scooter, which overturned. The craft was found on the shore at Mørkvedbukta around 03:52, according to Nordland police’s incident log.

Incident commander Christian Vikran Karlsen called the swim a frightening ordeal. “She was very lucky to find that heated office.” The woman is being cared for. Overnight the rescue boat, the Bodø helicopter, firefighters with divers, Norwegian People’s Aid, rescue dogs and drones were all out. At 06:50 the sea search paused until daylight and a crew change.

On Saturday morning shore and sea searches resumed with police and firefighters. At 11:35 police confirmed the missing man’s age band and home district. At 14:10 they said the sea part of the operation had become a search for a person presumed dead (SEAO). On land it remains a rescue search until dusk, operations leader Stig Østbø said.

That is not a confirmed death. It is a change in search category after hours with no trace. Police, firefighters and volunteers are still working on water and on land. Identities have not been released.

NRK first ran a news-ticker item, then a Nordland article. The police log, still open on Saturday afternoon, says the same: scooter accident, one person ashore, one missing, search ongoing.
