On Friday the wind came down from the interior towards the shore. Santa Ana. The Guardian put the Orange County houses in the headline. The Norte Fire started in San Clemente, on Portico Del Norte, after 11.30. It climbed into San Juan Capistrano. Mark Backoff, OCFA, Friday afternoon: at least six homes destroyed, topography and weather, the fire grew fast. ABC, Saturday night: 570 acres, 25% contained, seven homes damaged or destroyed. The cause is under investigation. Two house counts. Two days.

About 16,000 people, 4,600 homes, in the evacuation zone at the peak. Mandatory orders: San Clemente 12–13, San Juan Capistrano 4, 5, 10. Nine schools, early dismissal. Two firefighters, heat exhaustion, on Friday. Injured residents: none reported. On Saturday evening the orders were lifted. That is the update. It is not the extinguishing.

Interstate 5, closed for part of the afternoon, black smoke on visibility. The Henderson Fire, at Camp Pendleton, Thursday, more than 2,000 acres, 20% contained Friday evening. Bryson, Malibu, 146 acres, 39% contained, more than 7,200 structures under threat, no house reported destroyed there. Peak, Azusa, forward progress stopped. Santa Anas, 25–45 mph, gusts to 65. Heat 92F. Red flag through Saturday night.

Gavin Newsom secured a Fire Management Assistance Grant from FEMA for Norte. Schoenfeld, in the Guardian: the wind is not the 2025 one, when gusts hit 100 mph, thousands of homes, more than 30 dead. That is the comparison. It is not the same fire.

T.J. McGovern, OCFA chief: wind “relentless”. Friday’s aim was to hold the fire inside its footprint. Helicopters, aircraft, 400 firefighters, another 400 on the way. Houses at the end of a cul-de-sac, black. Others, red with retardant. The cause, unknown. The inquiry, open.

Until a cause, the acres remain. After a cause, the houses remain. Anyone who mixes them turns a wind into a final tally.
