A fire broke out overnight into Saturday, 17 October 2026, in a Coop store in Gamlestaden, Gothenburg. The first alarm came just after 04:00. Police logged the incident at 04:33 on Treriksgatan: a grocery store fully alight, with no reports of injuries.
Kalle Kivistö, an alarm operator at the rescue service, told SVT that smoke divers had entered the premises and that crews would stay through the morning. The cause is still unclear. The area was cordoned off; police helped with barriers. The store remains closed on Saturday.
Coop staff on site said no one was hurt and that employees were well. Incident commander Robert Löv spoke to SVT about overnight smoke divers. Extinguishing work was still under way on Saturday morning.
TV4, citing Göteborgs-Posten, wrote that the fire started in an upstairs fan room and then reached the shop floor. Those origin details belong to local press reports, not the police note, which published no cause.
Until a technical inquiry, the origin remains unknown. This article assigns no intent and names no private individuals. The fire is an emergency event, not a finding of guilt.
