The French navy said on Wednesday, 21 October, that unauthorised drones had been detected “near and above military sites” in the Toulon area during the joint Typhon exercise (5–16 October). The Mediterranean zone command said that, as of today, no sensitive infrastructure had been threatened and that a judicial inquiry had been opened. Detection and an inquiry, not an attribution and not a conviction.
France 24, with AFP, writes that for each episode the planned measures were activated, including anti-drone systems, coordinated with the interior security forces. The same command refused to comment on how many incidents there were, what kind of drones were involved, or whether any craft had been neutralised. What the navy does not say, we do not fill in.
Ici Provence, confirmed by the maritime prefecture, places the night overflight between 9 and 13 October. The sites named: the naval base, a Direction générale de l’armement site in Toulon, and the 54th Artillery Regiment at Hyères. Those are places in the local report, not a damage list.
An unnamed source, quoted by Ici Provence, spoke of “several each time” and of large craft. The same report says the exact number and model could not be established, even with electromagnetic jamming. That is an unnamed source, not the navy communiqué. It is not an attributed attack and not the Italy/France riot cluster.
Typhon was a defence exercise for the military port, with land, air and sea manoeuvres in the Toulon roadstead and nearby communes. Some aircraft, including drones, belonged to the exercise. The navy distinguishes those from the unauthorised craft. Mixing the two is not today’s fact.
Overflight of the LF-P 62 Toulon restricted zone is, according to Ici Provence, forbidden by order except for emergency services. The Toulon prosecutor’s office is cited as the inquiry’s authority. Until a result, the closed fact is the navy’s statement: unauthorised drones near sites, anti-drone systems switched on, no sensitive infrastructure threatened, an inquiry opened, no named author.
