Internazionale Milan, coached by Cristian Chivu, beat Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0 at San Siro on Wednesday night in Matchday 3 of the Champions League league phase. Carlos Augusto scored in the 77th minute from a pass by substitute Henrikh Mkhitaryan. It was Inter’s first win of this European campaign, after opening defeats to Real Madrid and Club Brugge.
The hosts played with ten men from the 68th minute. Alessandro Bastoni picked up two yellow cards a few minutes apart: the first after a clash, the second after a shove at a corner. The referee in Milan was Germany’s Harm Osmers, not István Kovács. Shakhtar, coached by Arda Turan, had spells of control after the sending-off, but Inter scored on the break.
Late on, goalkeeper Josep Martínez made a double save, including from Newerton. UEFA named the scorer player of the match. Three home points are not a ticket to the knockout rounds: the competition is a league phase, not the old groups, and after three matchdays qualification stays open.
Also on Wednesday, in Madrid, István Kovács refereed Real Madrid against RB Leipzig, 4-1. Bernardo Silva opened just before half-time — News.ro listed the 44th minute — Arda Güler scored in the 52nd, Kylian Mbappé in the 83rd, and Yan Diomande finished in the 87th against his former club. Tidiam Gomis pulled one back in the 85th. UEFA noted two Thibaut Courtois saves in the first half, before Madrid went 3-0 and then 4-1.
News.ro kept the two results together because a Romanian coach won in Milan and a Romanian referee took charge in Madrid. Neither Inter’s win nor Real’s closes the last 16.
Shakhtar still have no Champions League win against Inter. Real stay on three wins from three. The rest of Wednesday’s round — Como against United, the Bayern–Arsenal draw, Villa — does not change the scores at San Siro and the Bernabéu.
