Nineteen people died on Saturday evening, 17 October, in a crush at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal in north Kolkata. The Hindu raised the toll on Sunday. The dead include four children and 11 women. Another 25 people were injured, two in intensive care according to the Indian Express. The New York Times flagged the event; the readable body is in the Indian press.

Police put the time at about 19:40, on Maha Saptami, in the rain. People sought shelter in the pandal. An announcement that the structure might collapse sent the crowd toward a single exit, down narrow lanes. The exact causes are under investigation, not in a verdict.

Seven people were arrested, including committee secretary Raj Kumar Sewda and vice-president Santanu Dubey. The Girish Park case cites, among other provisions, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita section 105, culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and section 110. All were remanded to 10 days’ police custody. Arrest is not conviction. The presumption of innocence stands.

State chief minister Suvendu Adhikari announced a special investigation team and asked the Calcutta High Court for a sitting judge to lead it. Girish Park officer Sumit Kumar Ghosh was transferred. Police say they are checking cameras, exit routes and medical readiness. Adhikari asked for tighter crowd rules for the rest of the festival.

Residents described a narrow, dark iron corridor, designed as a symbolic path. After the crush, some said they had felt trapped. The roles of Kolkata Municipal Corporation and the fire service will also be examined, Adhikari said, without declaring them guilty at the outset.

Durga Puja continues in the city. Nineteen deaths do not yet become a legal conclusion. There are victims, case files and an open inquiry.
