On Tuesday evening, 20 October 2026, a Mirage 2000D of fighter squadron 2/3 “Champagne”, air base 133 Nancy-Ochey, crashed in the Rogéville area of Meurthe-et-Moselle. The Armed Forces Ministry statement dated 21 October: around 22:40, returning from a mission. A reported accident. The cause is not established.
On board were a pilot and a weapons-systems officer. One body has been found; identification is pending. The second crew member is being sought. The ministry: safety and judicial inquiries. We publish no names. Recovering a body is not a conviction and not a technical finding.
Colonel David Pappalardo, on franceinfo: a standard training sortie, two-seat, unarmed. Approach control lost radio, then radar. “At least one of the crew members was unable to eject.” Too early for conclusions. Pappalardo: a young pilot under instruction and a weapons officer with many hours. Colonel Ludovic Humbert, the base commander: a very experienced navigator and a young pilot with the required qualifications. The body found had not been identified by Wednesday morning, according to franceinfo.
Prefect Yves Séguy: hard weather, night, fog, no helicopter. Search on foot and with a drone. First wreckage around 4 a.m. on Wednesday. Rogéville’s mayor, Pascal Doyotte: witnesses heard an explosion and saw a fireball around 22:30. The air force: an exceptional accident, a complex but controlled situation. Daily Sabah, after AP, reported the same crash; AP’s 21:00 GMT is not the ministry clock.
Humbert said the aircraft had been renovated recently and had no reliability problem. That is his wording, not the inquiry’s verdict. The Mirage 2000D is a two-seat ground-attack jet. It is not a Rafale. This is not a war today.
The search, after ICI Lorraine / franceinfo, focused between Rogéville, Tremblecourt and Domèvre-en-Haye. Dump Daily Sabah. The rewrite rests on franceinfo and the ministry statement. Finding one body does not close the inquiry.
