Janine Lochrenberg, 65, died on Tuesday morning, 20 October, after a shark attack off Orient Beach in KuGompo City, formerly East London, on South Africa’s east coast. The BBC reported the case the same day. This is an attack. It is not a criminal case about a human assailant.
She was swimming around 08:00 local time with her open-water club. Witnesses told the BBC she was bitten on the thigh and the upper arm. Fellow swimmers brought her to shore. Her sister Margot held her head; she believes she died in the water. Medics declared her dead on the beach. Her partner, Barbara Briceland, described her as a retired medical physicist, a strong swimmer, with a deep affinity for the water.
The BBC writes that this is the first such fatality recorded in South Africa in 2026. The International Shark Attack File, cited by the same report, counts about ten deaths since 2012. A fellow swimmer said she was wearing a magnetic band on her ankle. This article is not an assessment of the device.
Buffalo City Municipality closed Orient Beach and nearby Eastern Beach until further notice. Spokesperson Luzuko Buku asked people to be cautious and to follow warnings. KuGompo police opened an inquest, the usual step after a violent death. It is not a criminal pursuit of a human attacker and not a hunting brief.
News24 confirmed the beach closures and the victim’s identity. The shark’s species is not established in the BBC report. We do not name it here as fact.
Lochrenberg knew, her sister said, that shark presence in the area was elevated and had made peace with that. The family had been about to travel. What remains is a Tuesday death, two closed beaches and an inquest. Not a trial.
