On Saturday, 17 October 2026, the authorised Paris march ran from Place de la République to Place de Clichy, on a day of protest against the cost of living. The police prefecture reported 133 arrests at 14:00, mainly for gathering with intent to commit violence or damage. France24 repeated the 133 figure at 14:00. El Mundo described clashes on the margins of the march. Arrest is not conviction.

The main cortège set off at 14:30 despite clashes in the city centre. The prefecture said that from 13:00 several hundred violent people, “essentially from the far left”, attacked officers with projectiles, including stones. Tear gas and a water cannon were used to stop those actions and let other marchers reach the cortège.

The march brought together yellow vests, school pupils, students, unions and climate activists. Undeclared gatherings were banned around sensitive sites, including the Élysée, Matignon and the Champs-Élysées. France24, citing the prefecture, said an undeclared cortège heading towards the presidential palace was turned back. The number of people in that group was not given.

Prime minister Sébastien Lecornu convened an interministerial crisis cell with his office, the interior ministry and other departments concerned, Nouvel Obs reported from Matignon sources. At 15:00 the interior ministry reported strong turnouts in Lyon, Nantes and Rennes, 272 arrests nationwide and “particularly serious acts”, including in Marseille and Lyon.

France24 also reported incidents in other cities: part of Lille city hall was vandalised; in Lyon a tourist office on Place Bellecour was set on fire; in Marseille protesters briefly entered the city-hall lobby. Those accounts are from the press and the ministry, not court verdicts.

Jean-Luc Mélenchon said tens of thousands marched calmly while rolling news showed images of violence. Marine Le Pen accused the far left of taking legitimate social demands “hostage”. Those are political statements, not court findings.

The 133 Paris arrests at 14:00 describe a day still under way, not a verdict. This article does not name individuals and does not treat arrest as conviction.
