On Saturday, 17 October 2026, Tech. Sgt. Ian Patterson fell during a rope descent from the Alamodome rafters, before the UTSA–Navy football game. He was treated on the field, taken to a San Antonio hospital and pronounced dead there. Nellis AFB identified him on Monday. Incident and death confirmed. The cause is not closed.

Patterson was a Tactical Air Control Party instructor with Detachment 2, 6th Combat Training Squadron, at Joint Base San Antonio, 15 years in. The 57th Wing, at Nellis, oversees the unit. A wing spokesman: the investigation is under way; they will not discuss operational details, so as not to impede it. Videos from the stands show a fast descent, with no visible brake. The image is not the inquiry’s report.

The demonstration, Task & Purpose writes, was four people, at the Salute to Armed Forces & Veterans night. The height, about 170 feet — some 52 metres. San Antonio Fire Department took him with life-threatening injuries. The game was delayed about ten minutes, then went on. UTSA won. Playing on is not a medical finding.

Brig. Gen. Scott C. Mills, 57th Wing commander: the loss is felt across the wing; the team stands with the family. UTSA president Taylor Eighmy: a day of camaraderie was marked by sadness. Condolences do not close the file.

The BBC reported the identification on 19 October. Today, the 21st, there is no new official cause. It is not a sentence, not an announced material fault, not blame on a teammate. Patterson, from Fort Stewart, Georgia, was Headquarters Air Force Special Warfare Enlisted Instructor of the Year in 2022. The award does not explain the fall.

Navy was the opponent on the field, not his service. Patterson is Air Force. The “Sgt.” in some headlines skips the Tech. Sgt. rank in the Nellis release.
