On 28 September 2026, PSD’s National Political Council decided unanimously that the party’s lawmakers would not vote for the cabinet proposed by prime minister-designate Siegfried Mureșan. Party president Sorin Grindeanu announced the outcome after the meeting.
Grindeanu called the stance “firm, assumed and irreversible.” That language describes a political refusal of support. It is not, by itself, the constitutional rejection of a government. Only a parliamentary vote produces that result.
The Social Democrats said they would attend the investiture sitting, announced for Wednesday, so that a quorum would not be missing, but would vote against the cabinet. Presence in the chamber and the direction of the vote are different things.
The council’s decision confirms a recommendation adopted a week earlier by the National Permanent Bureau. The national political forum is the body that sets the party’s final position in such cases. Monday’s meeting closed, for PSD, the internal deliberation stage.
The prime minister-designate had publicly counted on votes from PNL, USR and UDMR. Without PSD, the parliamentary arithmetic narrows. How many mandates suffice is seen only on a roll-call, not in party statements.
Grindeanu criticised the governing programme, which he said reached the party shortly before the council meeting. PSD’s assessment of the document remains a party position. Deficit or poverty figures are read from statistical institutions, not from a post-vote speech.
Until Parliament votes, negotiations, attendance and any publicly declared shifts remain open. A 28 September article does not forecast Wednesday’s result and does not turn a press conference into a decision of the chambers.
