A fire destroyed, overnight into Saturday 17 October 2026, the façade of the Michel-Serres building of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Rouen, on boulevard André-Siegfried in Mont-Saint-Aignan. Firefighters were called just after 2:30. Prosecutor Sébastien Gallois said the fire spread over about 200 square metres of façade and about 15 square metres of roof. No one was injured.
Police’s first findings pointed to a deliberate fire, with rubbish or a bin set alight at the entrance, the prosecutor said. Inside, the building was mainly hit on the stairwell. The main seat was put out around 4:30; the prefecture said 50 firefighters and 30 appliances were deployed.
The Rouen prosecutor’s office opened an inquiry for wilful destruction by fire, assigned to the territorial crime division. Witnesses are asked to contact the police. No suspects have been named: the investigation is open, and the presumption of innocence applies. The precise cause remains with forensic police.
Higher-education minister Philippe Baptiste wrote that the fire was deliberate and that the courts must punish those responsible. The university said the building, with lecture halls and student services, is closed for an indefinite period.
