It is not a border operation. It is a mountain emergency. Two Ukrainian men, five days on the trail, exhausted, called 112. Salvamont Maramureș, the county council’s mountain rescue service, sent them the access code for the Refuge of Hope on Pop Ivan peak. They spent the night there. Radio România Actualități reported the recovery. Salvamont’s statement, on the Agerpres wire, is longer.
In the morning the two started down on phone instructions. The team climbed to meet them. At the meeting: sandwiches, tea. One had pain in the left knee. An elastic bandage was put on so he could walk. He refused hospital. That is the medical limit in the statement, not a diagnosis.
The intervention closed with a handover to the Valea Vișeului Border Police. Salvamont says handover. It does not say offence, it does not say names, it does not say why they were on the ridge. Local papers copied the same sentence. We stay with it.
It is the second use of the refuge in less than a month. In September a 24-year-old Ukrainian, exhausted after about three days of walking, was taken from there and the handover was again at Valea Vișeului. Salvamont counts three people, two interventions. The hut sits at about 1,850 metres in the Maramureș Mountains, near Pop Ivan. Access is by code. The alarm still goes through 112.
It was placed there by the Department for Emergency Situations, the Interior Ministry’s General Aviation Inspectorate, Lions Germany, Lions Romania and Salvamont Maramureș. The statement turns that into a demonstration of use. The demonstration is: two nights, three people. It is not an annual rescue statistic.
On the mountain, exhaustion does not wait for a file. The refuge held the door. The rest — who they were, where they were going — is not in the statement.
