On Tuesday, 20 October 2026, at 10:48 p.m., Toledo Fire & Rescue ordered an evacuation within a mile of 1050 Progress Ave, in north Toledo, Ohio, after a hazardous-materials release. On Wednesday at 4:24 a.m. the same service ordered shelter-in-place within three miles: indoors, windows closed, outdoor ventilation off, pets inside. The city page, updated at 4:25 a.m., said the release was still going. An order, not an author.
No injuries, no deaths, no explosion, the city writes. Only a release. The substance is not named. The city describes it as an irritant: burning of the eyes, nose, mouth and skin. WTOL, quoting spokesperson Tiffany Morrissey, says toxicity is not confirmed. An irritant in a notice is not a lab diagnosis.
WTOL, updated at 6:47 a.m., moves the origin to the MC Tank terminal, 1266 Progress Ave, not Sterling Pipe & Tube at 1050, which officials first named. Sterling’s operations director, Randy Sprow, said his plant does not have the chemicals involved. The two addresses are not the same building. At 4:25 a.m. the city still centred the zones on 1050.
Spokesperson Sheldon Collins: nearby facilities evacuated after a plume of chemical-containing smoke. What was in the air was not known. Shelters: Shoreland Elementary; the Meijer lot off E. Alexis, with the Red Cross and TARTA buses. City fog, the notice says, cannot be told from the plume by eye. An odour alone is not a toxic dose.
A 7:30 a.m. news conference was listed, with Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz. The listing is not a report of the conference. The cause remains under investigation, with the EPA on the air, according to WTOL. No one is charged.
One mile is 1.6 km; three miles, 4.8 km. Toledo sits by the Ohio–Michigan line; ClickOnDetroit places the incident “near” the border. It is not an accident in Michigan. 911 is for emergencies; the city sends non-urgent questions to Engage Toledo.
