On the night of Thursday to Friday, 16 October 2026, two cabins on Emblemsfjellet, near Ålesund, burned. Møre og Romsdal police asked at 13:49 on Friday for tips from the area and said an investigation had begun at once. NRK reported from the scene. The fires are under investigation; no perpetrator has been named.
Police are linking the Emblemsfjellet fires to several other unsolved fires in the district. Unit head Linn Breivik Erstad said the inquiry is a priority, that it is being pursued broadly, and that residents will see more officers talking to people. She asked for photos, video and observations, including apparently minor ones, on 02800 or the tips portal at politiet.no.
NRK quoted incident commander Mathias Stemland: two cabins so close, in the same window, are “special”, and one hypothesis is arson. The ground was wet after rain. Emergency operator Linn Haugen said the distance was about 200 metres and ruled out the fire jumping from one cabin to the other. The cabins had no mains electricity, NRK reported.
NRK also wrote of a possible link to six unsolved fires on neighbouring Sulafjellet. The police notice does not give that number; it speaks only of “several” unsolved fires. Firefighters reached the site with difficulty, with no road to the cabins. Neighbours quoted by NRK believe the fire was set; that is opinion, not a verdict.
Erstad said physical traces are destroyed by fire and that police, not the public, decide which tip matters. She thanked people for the volume of tips already received and asked for vigilance, not for residents to run their own investigation.
This article does not name a suspect and does not treat arson as proven.
