The International Cycling Union and the Saudi Cycling Federation said the 2026 Urban Cycling World Championships, due in Riyadh from 3 to 7 November, will not go ahead. Their joint statement cites an assessment of regional developments and the effect on logistics. It does not name a new date and does not move the races to another city.
The programme was to cover trials and BMX freestyle, park and flatland. For the 2028 Los Angeles Games, Riyadh was due to award four Olympic places in BMX freestyle park: two for men and two for women. The UCI said it would set out the sporting consequences shortly. Until then the places have not been reassigned.
The Associated Press and CBC tie the cancellation to missile attacks from Yemen on Saudi Arabia and to the bombing of Riyadh's airport in the previous week. The UCI statement does not name attackers. It uses the language of regional developments. Those two layers stay separate: the security cause is the agencies' reporting, the sporting decision is the federations'.
On the same Friday, 16 October, AusCycling pulled its team. The Australian federation cited travel advice about an unpredictable security situation, with strikes and reprisals including in Riyadh. It could not, it wrote, expose athletes and staff. Other federations had asked for a relocation, not only a cancellation.
The UCI, based in Aigle, Switzerland, thanked the Saudi hosts and the riders. The Saudi federation restated its interest in hosting international racing in later years. Riyadh had already staged the event and held a two-year hosting deal. The cancellation breaks the 2026 urban calendar, not the partnership on paper.
At Paris 2024, BMX freestyle park was held in Place de la Concorde. In 2028 it is due at Sepulveda Basin in Los Angeles. The Olympic pathway still includes places at the 2027 UCI Cycling World Championships in Haute-Savoie. The UCI has not said the four Riyadh places automatically move there.
Riders now face a hole in the calendar and an LA28 qualifying path with one gate shut. Until the promised update, the cancellation is a fact and any reallocation is an intention. Nobody has an Olympic ticket from this route, because the route closed before the start.
