On Tuesday, 20 October 2026, the UK Ministry of Defence announced extra defensive military support for Saudi Arabia, given escalating Houthi attacks. RAF Typhoons will fly defensive counter-air missions over Saudi cities and critical infrastructure. They will operate in a defensive role and will not conduct offensive strikes against the Houthis. This is a deployment decision, not British fighting already under way, and not the Aden blast reported separately.
Defence Secretary Wes Streeting said he had approved the support. The BBC writes that the mission was authorised by Prime Minister Andy Burnham. The number of aircraft is not given in the statement. Streeting called the attacks on the ally “absolutely despicable” and singled out the airport in Riyadh.
The UK will also provide an A400M to move defence materiel inside Saudi Arabia, and military advisers alongside Saudi staff officers. The package builds on air-defence equipment already deployed and on air-to-air refuelling of Saudi operations. The BBC: the refuelling is extended by 90 days. That extension is not the same as Typhoons taking off.
The MoD statement also ties refuelling to Saudi defensive operations “including to degrade Houthi military targets in Yemen.” That is the Saudi mission, not the Typhoons’ mandate, which remains defensive. The Guardian notes that the British patrol could free Saudi aircraft for offensive strikes. That is a possible consequence, not a published order for the RAF to bomb Yemen.
The BBC: a missile strike on 10 October on Riyadh’s international airport killed 13 people and injured 308; Saudi authorities last week spoke of 19 dead in attacks on airports. Those are two counts. Neither is a tally of the British mission, which had not begun on Tuesday.
