It is not a bust announced. It is a pipe that no longer fits in the ground. The Financial Times put a large number on the table: US spending on AI infrastructure could pass $10 trillion between 2025 and 2032. Then it put the delays beside it. The wire is Sunday’s. Asia Business Daily picked it up. The market, though, had been audible since Wednesday, on CoreWeave.
RegLayer, a regulatory-intelligence firm, counted more than 47 large US data-centre projects delayed, withdrawn or suspended in 2026. Bernstein estimated, also this month, that only about 35% of planned construction is credible. The FT wrote that more than 1,000 communities are preparing restriction measures. Water, power, transformers, a grid hook-up. Those are not slides. They are town halls.
Financing is the second wall. “Neoclouds”, clouds built for AI, buy chips and pour concrete on debt. Rates have risen. The bond market has narrowed. CoreWeave, backed also by Nvidia, became the thermometer. Reuters: about $50 billion of debt. CNBC, 14–15 October: the stock fell, bond yields went towards 15%, CDS crossed the distress line. That is the market. It is not a site report.
If the data centre is not handed over on time, the client — a lab, a tech giant — can tear up the contract. The FT notes schedule pressure also on projects tied to OpenAI and Anthropic. Some firms have never poured a metre of data centre. Others have raised only a slice of the money to run the plant. Speed, analysts say, no longer justifies the ticket on its own.
$10 trillion is an interval estimate, not an invoice. 35% is a Bernstein sieve, not a census. 47 is a RegLayer count of large projects, not the whole map. Anyone who bundles them into “the collapse of AI” jumps from pipe to verdict. Anyone who ignores them stays on the 2025 slide.
