USR’s Political Committee decided unanimously on Friday, 16 October 2026, that the party’s MPs will vote against investing the cabinet proposed by prime minister-designate Luca Niculescu. That is a party leadership decision, not the parliamentary vote. Reports place the investiture in the following week; this article does not announce a roll-call result.
The position was issued in a statement carried by Agerpres. USR president Dominic Fritz said “Romania needs a functioning government, but not at any price”. He rejected, in his wording, an executive “run from PSD headquarters” and backed by a “toxic” majority with AUR. That attribution is USR’s opinion, not a legal description of the majority.
The party says it will not, by its vote, underwrite a return to practices it blames for blocking modernisation — waste, privileges, delayed reforms. Stability, in the statement, must rest on reforms, responsible public spending, an independent judiciary and respect for citizens.
Fritz said USR will stay in opposition, watch the next government’s actions and work to build a reformist political alliance for the next elections. A pledge to scrutinise is not a coalition agreement and not an electoral timetable.
USR accuses PSD of presenting a return to government as a stability solution while, in the party’s reading, the model would mean waste, privileges and blocked reforms. That charge is from the statement, not an independent finding about the programme.
Unanimity in the Political Committee binds the parliamentary group to a “no” at investiture. An MP may still vote otherwise in the chamber; this account does not treat whip discipline as already recorded on a roll-call.
