A 34-year-old woman was released without charges, not on bail, after she drove a Chevrolet pickup through a youth soccer game at Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, Kansas, on Saturday. Adrian Cole, 6, and Nicholas Schafer, 35, both of McPherson and not related, died. Wichita police said on Sunday they were waiting on toxicology and a mechanical exam of the truck. The investigation continues. This is not a conviction and not a proven intent.
The mill hint spoke of a male driver freed on bail. Police facts are different: a woman from Garden City, no warrant, a valid licence, detained at the wheel, then released after the Sedgwick County district attorney was consulted. She has been cooperative, Capt. Aaron Moses said. Why she drove onto the field, police do not yet know. Chief Joe Sullivan: "We know what happened, but now we're working very hard to find out why."
911 calls began around 3:25pm local time. The truck had been parked near the fields, then went onto the grass. Two of the driver's children were in the cab; a third was playing on another pitch. More than 30 witnesses were interviewed, including the two children in the truck. Ten people were hurt, from bruises to severe injuries described as not life-threatening: five children aged 5 to 9 and five adults. An 11th person, a 61-year-old woman, had a medical problem unrelated to trauma from the truck.
McPherson City FC called it an unimaginable tragedy and asked for privacy. McPherson's city government said the town is hurting. The complex cancelled all events. The Kansas high-school association suspended flag-football finals set for the site.
AP and KWCH confirm the release and the lack of charges. Until toxicology and mechanics come back, the cause could be accident, illness, a defect or something else. Nobody in this article has been found guilty. Police have not named the driver.
Stryker is a city complex with 11 fields. Saturday was meant to be children and families. It ended with two dead on the grass and an open file. Release does not close the case. It only means that, for now, there is no charge.
