China on Wednesday called the US midterm elections an “internal matter” for the United States and said it is ready to keep working with Washington on shared interests and where the two sides diverge, AFP and dpa reported via Agerpres.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning told a press briefing that Beijing is willing “to continue to work with the United States to uphold and implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state, strengthen communication and properly manage differences.”
The remarks follow Tuesday’s results in which Democrats took majorities in both the Senate and the House, with wins that cut into Republican strongholds — a sharp rebuke to President Donald Trump’s administration.
Mao stressed China’s aim to build a “constructive and strategically stable” China–US relationship based on respect, fairness and reciprocity, seeking to insulate bilateral ties from shifts in America’s domestic politics.
Xi Jinping and Donald Trump held two rare summits this year that Beijing presents as steps toward strategic stability; another meeting is expected around mid-November on the sidelines of the APEC summit.
Reports say China is talking with the US and Russia about a possible trilateral Xi–Trump–Putin meeting at the APEC summit in Shenzhen (18–19 November); Mao did not confirm a final schedule.
