Democrats’ midterm landslide will give the opposition power to block legislation, launch broad investigations into Donald Trump’s administration and thwart judicial and senior appointments, Daily Sabah reports.
Results reflected deep anger over living costs, tariffs and Trump’s war against Iran, which sent fuel prices soaring and compounded dissatisfaction with an already unpopular president. Trump struck a conciliatory note, telling The New York Times he was “absolutely willing” to accept the results, and telling Fox: “I think the Democrats did a good job (…). They fought hard” — while adding he does not “view it as a hit on me.”
He acknowledged Iran contributed to the defeat while defending the campaign, and suggested common ground on immigration. As he conceded, the Democratic win grew when former logger Troy Jackson beat longtime Republican Sen. Susan Collins in Maine — the party’s seventh Senate seat taken from Republicans.
Earlier breakthroughs in Kansas and Iowa clinched the Senate majority after stunning victories in Texas, South Carolina, North Carolina and Ohio. In Kansas, Methodist minister Adam Hamilton became the first Democrat elected to the Senate there since 1932; Iowa had not elected a Democratic senator since 2008.
In Texas, James Talarico said he had defeated “Goliath” for a Senate seat while Gina Hinojosa unseated Republican governor Greg Abbott, ending decades of GOP rule. In Georgia, celebrations followed a big Senate win by Jon Ossoff.
