USR president Dominic Fritz commented on Sunday in Timișoara on the baptism of the son of Timiș County Council president Alfred Simonis (PSD), an event that on Saturday evening brought together several Social Democrat leaders. Fritz said USR representatives, in the city for the party congress, were not invited and mocked the outfits shown in circulating images.

“We were not invited and we did not come with a wardrobe suited for that. We do not have such things, because first of all we do not have money — not their sums. But we are very curious where they get them,” Fritz said, according to News.ro. The remark followed social-media photos of partners of some PSD leaders in expensive-looking attire, including furs, which commenters linked to “luxury and opulence.”

Digi24 also reported criticism from the National Liberal Party. Vice-president Gigel Știrbu described the event in a Facebook post as a contrast with many Romanians’ finances and spoke of the “pomp” in Timișoara. Those reactions are political positions, not a court finding on guests’ wealth.

The Simonis child was baptised by PSD leader Sorin Grindeanu. Participants named by agencies and TV outlets include, among others, Lia Olguța Vasilescu, PSD ministers and former ministers, and mayors. The reports do not contain an official appraisal of outfit prices; online cost estimates remain unverified.

The ceremony was private in form but gained public relevance through the PSD elite’s presence and the opposition’s messages. Fritz’s statement does not prove the origin of money; it frames a political question against circulating images.
