Romania’s Gendarmerie has denied a social-media “news” story claiming an alleged 18-year-old MMA fighter fought three gendarmes and acted in “self-defence.” The force says no such real incident took place and that the material began as a fake post.
According to the statement, carried by Digi24 and ProTV News, the post described an alleged event in Soveja commune (Vrancea) and falsely attributed it to a well-known media brand. After checks, gendarmes concluded it came from a fake profile and was a joke among friends; the post was later deleted.
ProTV notes that the forged text attributed to its newsroom claimed the young man, described as an athlete from Soveja, had clashed with three gendarmes and that “competent authorities” had recognised self-defence. The Gendarmerie rejects that narrative as disinformation.
“From a joke to disinformation is just one click,” officials said, warning that sharing such messages can have legal consequences depending on the circumstances and urging the public to verify sources before resharing.
The denial does not name the joke’s authors or announce a specific prosecution in the cited statement; it clarifies only that the social-media incident did not occur as a gendarmerie service event.
