On Wednesday, 21 October 2026, Israeli forces detained about 80 volunteers helping Palestinian farmers pick olives near the village of Nahalin, outside Bethlehem. Among them: Brad Lander, the Democratic nominee for New York’s 10th congressional district. A detention, not an announced formal charge.
Rabbis for Human Rights: the group was on village land; the army and police said the area was a closed military zone and took them to a station. The organisation: they could not have known the order beforehand and offered to leave. Lander, on X: they were “simply harvesting olives”; occupation is a crime under international law, harvesting is not. A quote, not our verdict.
Lander was released with a “warning”, he said, because of his public profile; he told them he was not yet a member of Congress, only a nominee. Dozens of others remained detained at the time of the reports. Anton Goodman, of RHR, to Reuters (in The Straits Times): those who were neither Israeli nor Palestinian citizens were expected to be taken to a military base. Jill Jacobs, of T’ruah, to Reuters: she knew of no formal accusations.
Protect the Harvest, the organiser: a peaceful pick on private land, at a family’s invitation; why the army came remains unclear. Joshua Schoffman, a former Israeli deputy attorney general, also detained: they stopped when asked, with no friction with settlers or the forces. The army, the police and the US embassy in Jerusalem did not immediately answer The Guardian / The Straits Times.
Lander is the nominee for 3 November, a former New York City comptroller. He is not a member of Congress. He called for the others to be released. Detention plus release with a warning is not a conviction and not a published charge. Dump The Straits Times. The rewrite rests on The Guardian. We do not mix Wednesday’s detention with the weekend attacks on journalists and diplomats: another clock.
