Today, 11 September 2026, marks 50 years since the inauguration of Acharya Nagarjuna University, an important higher-education institution in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The ceremony took place on 11 September 1976 and was conducted by the then President of India, Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed.

The institution was originally known as Nagarjuna University. It was established in 1976 under Andhra Pradesh state legislation — Act 43 of 1976 of the State Legislature. University records show that the institution came into being in August 1976; 11 September marks the official inauguration, not necessarily the legal act of founding. The present name, Acharya Nagarjuna University, was adopted in 2004 through an ordinance amending the state’s university legislation. The campus is at Nagarjuna Nagar, between Vijayawada and Guntur, along National Highway NH-16 in south-eastern India.

The university’s origins

The university’s creation was connected to the need to expand access to higher education in this part of Andhra Pradesh. Before the new institution was formed, a postgraduate centre connected to Andhra University had operated in the region. The development of that centre and growing demand for university programmes contributed to the creation of an independent university. The institution confirms in its own materials that the official inauguration took place on 11 September 1976, conducted by President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed.

Why Nagarjuna?

The university is named after Acharya Nagarjuna, a philosopher and scholar associated with Buddhist tradition and one of the important intellectual figures of ancient India. Nagarjuna is particularly known for his philosophical contributions and his influence on the development of Mahayana Buddhist thought. The institution highlights a symbolic connection with the intellectual tradition of the region; the present campus is not far from the area associated with his memory, on the banks of the Krishna River. The name Acharya Nagarjuna University, used since 2004, makes that heritage explicit.

From 1976 to a large university

In the decades that followed, the university expanded its programmes and infrastructure. Today it operates as a state university with a network of colleges, departments and affiliated institutions. Its academic programmes cover fields including science, humanities, commerce, management, law, engineering and other disciplines, and the institution has also developed research activities. In its own materials, Acharya Nagarjuna University describes itself as one of the important and rapidly expanding universities in Andhra Pradesh. Those materials put the campus at around 300 acres along the national highway between Vijayawada and Guntur.

Growing with the region

The university was founded during a period in which India was expanding its public higher-education infrastructure. After independence in 1947, the number of universities and colleges across the country increased considerably. Regional institutions played an important role in providing access to higher education for students unable to travel to major university centres. Acharya Nagarjuna University formed part of that expansion: it provided a dedicated university structure for a populous region with growing demand for postgraduate education.

The Golden Jubilee

The year 2026 marks the university’s Golden Jubilee, covering the anniversary period 1976–2026. The institution has been promoting activities linked to its 50 years of existence; in July 2026, its leadership announced a programme of celebrations that includes 11 September. The jubilee is a milestone for former and current students, academic staff and communities across Andhra Pradesh connected with the institution over five decades. The university previously celebrated its Silver Jubilee in 2001, 25 years after the inauguration. The 50th anniversary gives it an opportunity to look both at its origins and at the transformations in Indian higher education over the past half century.

50 years later

On 11 September 1976, the inauguration of Nagarjuna University marked the formal beginning of a new regional institution of higher education. Fifty years later, Acharya Nagarjuna University operates as a far more complex institution than the one that began its journey that day. Its development also reflects the wider expansion of higher education in India during recent decades. The 11 September 2026 anniversary therefore marks not only the history of one university but also a period in which access to university education expanded rapidly across many regions of the country. For Acharya Nagarjuna University, today represents exactly half a century since the ceremony that officially inaugurated the institution.
