Romania’s Permanent Electoral Authority has told the Government that mayoral elections should be organised in 35 localities after mayors’ terms ended early. The announcement, carried by BZI on 28 October 2026, comes from AEP president Adrian Țuțuianu; it does not yet set a polling date.

The list could grow by another six or seven localities, depending on how appeals by the affected mayors are decided. Some cases relate to conflict-of-interest and incompatibility rules, according to the AEP chief.

AEP sent the Executive a detailed briefing on prematurely ended mayoral mandates. Actually holding the votes remains with the authorities under the legal procedure; this article invents no government timetable.

Separately, Țuțuianu said he had a first talk with prime minister Luca Niculescu about changing electoral law and the rules for political parties. They are to review AEP proposals, either via government-revived bills or party initiatives.

The AEP head also floated a special parliamentary committee on reform, with a goal of finishing the normative framework by the end of June 2027. That reform track is distinct from the 35 localities that need mayoral elections.
