Lancashire told Jimmy Anderson, 44, on Monday that it will not offer him a new contract for the 2027 season. The Guardian reported on Wednesday, 21 October, that new chief executive Richard Kenyon and Paul Farbrace, the director of cricket hired from Sussex, informed him he does not feature in their plans. The Times reported the meeting first.

Farbrace does not officially start until next month. The club declined to comment. People close to Anderson, the BBC wrote, were unaware of the situation on Wednesday.

Anderson had been on season-by-season contracts with Lancashire after England forced him into international retirement in 2024. In the latest campaign he captained the side and took 50 wickets at 17.68 in 11 County Championship matches. The BBC notes he was the club’s Championship player of the year and that only six other Division Two bowlers bettered that tally.

Lancashire finished second-bottom in Division Two, their lowest placing in the two-division era, and failed to leave the group stages in both white-ball competitions. Daniel Gidney stood down as chief executive and Mark Chilton lost the director-of-cricket post. The BBC adds that a review of cricket operations is led by interim chair Dame Sarah Storey and Kenyon.

The Guardian writes that, unless an overseas deal or another county follows, Anderson appears to have played his last professional game. The BBC says it is not known whether he will retire or extend his career elsewhere. The Telegraph understands he will not seek a new county. None of the newsrooms quotes a retirement announcement by the player.

If he stops here, he finishes with 1,193 first-class wickets, 443 of them for Lancashire, and 704 in Tests, an England record. He made his Lancashire first-team debut in 2001, after a 2000 game for Lancashire Cricket Board. He was knighted in April 2025 for services to cricket.

In 2025 he signed a new Lancashire deal and suggested he could play three more seasons. He stood in as captain in 2025 and was given the job full-time for 2026. Monday’s decision is the new management’s, not a retirement statement.
