The Toronto Blue Jays beat the Detroit Tigers 5–1 on Wednesday, 16 September, at Rogers Centre, avoided a sweep and snapped the visitors’ six-game winning streak. Max Scherzer (3–8) threw five innings, allowing one run, three hits, three walks and three strikeouts. Toronto moved to 76–77 and stayed 1.5 games behind the American League wild-card place held by the Chicago White Sox after Chicago lost in Cleveland.

The home side scored twice in the fourth, on an Ernie Clement sacrifice fly and a Myles Straw RBI single. George Springer added an RBI in the fifth. In the sixth the Tigers made errors on consecutive plays, and Toronto scored two more. Brett Bateman had two hits. Louis Varland closed the ninth for his 34th save in 36 chances.

The win does not settle the schedule: the Blue Jays have few games left and little room for mistakes. Next comes a trip to Texas. Scherzer, who had strong years in Detroit, kept the score close until the offence broke through — not a complete domination, but enough in a tight season.
