Burkina Faso’s cabinet, chaired by Captain Ibrahim Traoré on 8 October 2026, created the “Ligue de la souveraineté”, a new football championship. It does not replace Fasofoot Ligue 1, the government says. It sits beside it. Sports minister Annick Lydie Djouma Pikbougoum/Zingué Ouattara, leaving the meeting: Ligue 1 is concentrated in Ouagadougou and Bobo-Dioulasso. The new league is meant to bring high-level play to every region. Twenty teams: one per region, three in Kadiogo, two in Guiriko, on a map of 17 regions. Lefaso.net reported the decision.
On 12 October Traoré called in the governors. The presidency: each selected athlete, a minimum 200,000 FCFA a month (about €300), plus extras. Nearly 1,000 jobs, the palace says. Media coverage. A warning against “fake deals”. Business operators invited to help: “a voluntary but compulsory contribution in each region.” That is Traoré’s phrasing, not a budget article published here.
RFI puts the league in the sequence after a 7–0 friendly loss to Argentina on 4 October. Traoré was angry with the federation, spoke of poor preparation. The initiative is sold as “shock therapy for a sick body” and as a way to value youth, against drugs and alcohol. “You cannot build a nation with a sick youth.” That is presidential speech, not a medical finding.
Yoro Mangara, quoted by RFI, thinks the new, better-paid league will pull good players from Ligue 1. Even if the old one remains, “it will not hold.” That is an opinion. It is not a FIFA ruling. Africanews (AFP) ran the launch on 15 October.
The league is a state championship, by region, with promised money. Who pays the “compulsory voluntary” contribution, who referees, who climbs into African cups: full regulations are not in the reporting yet. Fasofoot remains, on paper for now, the classic championship.
It is not a continental title. It is a cabinet decree and a meeting with governors. The first whistle has not been blown in the pieces consulted.
