Typhoon Champi reached Category 5 on Monday in the Philippine Sea, away from land. The U.S. weather service put sustained winds at 160 miles per hour, 258 kilometres per hour, late Monday Asia time. This is not a landfall today. It is a super typhoon at sea.
Earlier, the centre passed close to Guam's southern tip. The governors of Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands had asked on Friday for emergency declarations. Donald Trump approved Guam's. FEMA said on Saturday that federal aid would supplement the local response, that airports, harbours and some health facilities were closed, and that supplies might take three to five days. That is the aftermath of the pass, not a new strike on Monday.
Yale Climate Connections, on JTWC figures, wrote that Champi hit Category 5 after Guam, then weakened through an eyewall replacement. The AP bulletin on Monday morning puts it back at 160 miles per hour, still away from land. Intensity changes every few hours. It is not a Taiwan landfall forecast.
In the eastern Pacific, former hurricane Trudy weakened to a tropical storm early Monday after rain and wind on Mexico's Pacific coast. The National Hurricane Center in Miami gave it 60 miles per hour, 100 kilometres per hour, moving west at 6 miles per hour.
Trudy is moving away from the coast. The centre is expected to pass south of Baja California on Monday and Tuesday. More rain is possible on ground already soaked by successive storms. That is a local flood risk, not a Category 5 hurricane in Mexico.
AP put both systems in one story. WTOP ran the same text. A headline that sets Champi at Category 5 and Trudy weakening describes two oceans, not one disaster.
Until a new advisory, the facts are the measurements: Champi, Category 5, in the Philippine Sea, away from land; Trudy, a tropical storm, moving away from Mexico. Guam is in a relief phase, not a new impact.
