A documentary produced by Danish journalist Tom Heinemann and published by Deutsche Welle has brought attention to the way IKEA manages forests in Romania. In an interview with HotNews, Heinemann explains that he began his investigation in Romanian forests after discovering that the company cuts down a tree every second and is one of the world's largest consumers of wood. IKEA owns 50,400 hectares of forest in Romania, and 3% of the wood used by IKEA comes from our country. Experts say that ancient, mixed, and biodiverse forests are being replaced with monocultures lacking resistance and biodiversity. The Danish journalist argues that the international FSC certification, which guarantees the responsible sourcing of wood used by IKEA, is more of a bureaucratic formality than an effective mechanism for forest protection.
