On 15 October, Season 4 of The Diplomat landed on Netflix. Kate Wyler, the American ambassador in London, reaches, in the last two episodes, a fictional G7 in Italy. That G7 was not shot in a generic studio palace. It was shot in Tuscany: Lucca, the plain around it, Florence, Prato. Repubblica put Lucca up front. The Toscana Film Commission put the dates: principal photography, November 2025 to 5 June 2026, seven months, London, New York, Tuscany, plus English country houses.
The spectacular chapter, the commission writes, was in Lucca on 13 and 14 May 2026. The walled medieval city was dressed as an informal summit: flags, black cars, banners. Passers-by briefly thought a real diplomatic event was on. Crews worked the Palazzo Ducale on Piazza Napoleone, Porta San Pietro, Piazza San Frediano, Piazza Anfiteatro, Piazza Guidiccioni, Via Sant’Andrea. The municipality signed an agreement with the production: permits, road closures, controlled-access zones. The regional commission backed it.
In the story, Lucca is the summit town. Outside the walls, Villa Reale di Marlia — villa and formal gardens — gave delegation rooms. The Medici Villa at Poggio a Caiano, in Prato province, took exteriors and the orchestra night. Villa Medicea La Petraia, near Florence, gave the octagonal conference room. The lodgings, the greenhouse with basil, the president–vice-president walk-and-talks: Viesca Toscana, once the Ferragamo summer place — Villa Viesca and Villa Gelso. The tense poolside talk: Dimora Ghirlandaio, Impruneta. That is Tudum’s list, not a made-up tour.
The production designer said why so many sites: they needed different functions over weeks — rooms, arrivals, the concert night, the conference. Each had to feel like the same G7. The season’s last scene, he said: Kate, a small figure through large dark spaces, then out into the light. That is not a spoiler brief. It is a choice of frame.
Keri Russell stars. Rufus Sewell, Ali Ahn. The series is Debora Cahn’s. Netflix marked the season with screenings in London, Canberra, Brussels and Washington, with POLITICO, on 13–15 October. Russell called it a love letter to the foreign service. Cahn: there are not many shows about diplomats; she wanted to do them justice. Lucca’s city hall spoke of recognition: architecture, the plain, the capacity to host a heavy production. Remo Santini, tourism councillor: the 2026 filming list is a reason for pride, not something to take for granted. Rai shot Le libere donne there. A Norwegian Hotel Lauritz is coming. Reality shows, Dutch housewives, a Japanese Puccini documentary. The Diplomat is the big piece, not the only one.
The series, Netflix wrote, moved through more than 15 towns in Italy, the UK and the US. Tuscany does not replace London. It puts, for two episodes, a G7 on the table. Anyone who wants the places can find them on a map. Anyone who wants the diplomacy can find it on the platform, from 15 October.
