It is not a landed force. It is a request. Abdel Fattah al-Sisi asked parliament for an emergency session, to authorise the army to defend Saudi Arabia if Riyadh asks. The Times of India picked up the Reuters wire. Al Jazeera asked the question missing from the headline: what help, exactly? Until a vote, it is palace talk, not a convoy.
On Sunday the National Defence Council, with Sisi in the chair, said Egypt would give “all necessary and possible forms of support” for Saudi security, resources, territorial integrity and holy sites. On Saturday, at a military-academy ceremony, the president had said it was inconceivable to leave Saudi Arabia harmed, but that Egypt was not seeking to attack anyone. Reuters noted the formula. The intent is defensive. Egyptian law: without two-thirds in the House of Representatives, the president does not send the army on a foreign mission.
The vote did not come on Sunday. Two MPs told AFP the debate was stretched to Monday, so everyone could speak. Dawn published the delay. Anyone writing “Egypt intervenes” skips a step. Anyone writing “Egypt voted” gets the date wrong.
The context is the fire in Yemen. The Houthis, aligned with Iran, have hit Riyadh’s international airport and Aramco facilities, Reuters writes. Al Jazeera: King Khalid has been attacked at least 20 times since fighting with the recognised government resumed. The Saudi-led coalition hit Hodeidah. Egypt was already in the 2015 maritime coalition, with a limited role. The analyst quoted by Al Jazeera draws a line: now Sisi wants leave to defend Saudi territory, not only the strait. Troops on the Yemeni front, the same voice says, are unlikely. The memory of the 1960s, Nasser, is long.
Why Cairo. The Suez Canal has lost, the foreign minister says, about $11 billion since the Bab el-Mandeb attacks began in 2023. Millions of Egyptians work in the kingdom. One Egyptian was killed, others injured, in the airport attacks, Al Jazeera reports. Turkey and Pakistan have already made pledges. Egypt does not want, one analyst says, to remain the ally that stays on the bank.
Until Monday, it remains a session. If it passes, it is an authorisation conditioned on a Saudi request. If it does not, it is a Saturday speech. Neither of those is yet an Egyptian war.
