On Tuesday, 20 October 2026, U.S. District Judge Orlando Garcia, in San Antonio, sentenced Rigoberto Ramon Miranda-Orozco to 30 years in prison. The Justice Department press release lists him as 39. A KSAT correction on its national copy says 50, not 39. The two ages are not mixed. This is a first-instance federal sentence, after a guilty plea on 2 July. It is not the driver’s sentence.

DOJ: he pleaded guilty to conspiracy to bring a migrant into the United States resulting in death; aiding and abetting the same resulting in death; and aiding and abetting resulting in serious bodily injury. U.S. Attorney Justin R. Simmons said he was “personally responsible” for two Guatemalans who died; a third survived, badly hurt. That is not loading the whole trailer. It is not a conviction for all 53.

On 27 June 2022, on Quintana Road in San Antonio, a tractor-trailer that had come about 156 miles from Laredo, with no working air conditioning, in about 90°F heat, was found with 64 people. Forty-eight were pronounced dead at the scene; five more died in hospital — 53. Eleven injured, according to DOJ. Among the dead: six juveniles and at least one pregnant woman. No children’s names.

He was arrested in Guatemala in August 2024 on a U.S. extradition request and extradited in March 2025. KSAT: the driver, Homero Zamorano, is set for sentencing in December. He was not sentenced on Tuesday. Five defendants still await sentence; one is a fugitive, Tysen Duva said. Those are not Tuesday’s sentences.

Simmons spoke of “the rest of his life” in a U.S. federal prison. The written term is 30 years. A press-conference line is not the judge’s order. Tuesday’s sentence can be appealed; DOJ does not announce a final judgment.

His clients, two dead and one badly injured, were from Guatemala, DOJ writes. Twenty-one of the dead were Guatemalan. The 21 is not the two. Arranging travel through Guatemala, Mexico and the United States is his admission, not a jury trial.
