George R. R. Martin turns 78. Born in Bayonne, New Jersey, on 20 September 1948, he sold stories to neighbourhood children, studied journalism at Northwestern and published science fiction, fantasy and horror before television.

Early fiction took speculative-literature prizes. He edited the Wild Cards shared universe. Writing for The Twilight Zone and Beauty and the Beast sharpened dialogue and structure.

A Game of Thrones, the first A Song of Ice and Fire volume, appeared in 1996. The series builds a world of multiple viewpoints and fates that contradict convention. HBO’s adaptation made the books a phenomenon; Martin was a producer and writer on projects in the same universe and contributed to the world of Elden Ring.

The status of future volumes, including The Winds of Winter, has no release date announced here. Fan rumours are not an editorial calendar.
