Geoscience Australia recorded a magnitude 3.0 earthquake in south-eastern Victoria on Saturday, 17 October 2026, shortly after 2pm local time. The epicentre was at Kardella South, near Korumburra in Gippsland, about 135 kilometres south-east of Melbourne, at a depth of 5 kilometres. ABC reported no injuries or damage.

The federal agency received more than 200 felt reports — far fewer than the more than 21,000 reports after the 3 October mainshock, a magnitude 4.9 event near Leongatha confirmed by Geoscience Australia. Saturday’s reports came from near the epicentre, the Latrobe Valley and suburban Melbourne.

Monash University earthquake geologist Dee Ninis said the 17 October tremor was an aftershock of the earlier October quake: the same area, a lower magnitude. Aftershocks can be felt hours, days or weeks later; most are too small to notice. The Gippsland Basin has higher seismic activity than some other regions; Ninis recalled a magnitude 4.7 in 2009, followed by a similar event about two weeks later, and a 4.4 in 2011.

She also separated the sequence from the magnitude 5.9 Woods Point earthquake of September 2021, near Mansfield: the October 2026 tremors, she said, were unrelated seismic events. South Gippsland Shire mayor Nathan Hersey said he had not felt the latest aftershock, but residents were still talking about the 3 October quake, including in Arawata, near the original epicentre.

Geoscience Australia had warned after 3 October that aftershocks were possible and that it is not possible to predict when a sequence will fade. Seismologist Hadi Ghasemi noted that southern Victoria has, in the national seismic hazard assessment, a higher likelihood of earthquakes than other parts of the continent. Australia is not on a plate boundary; stress builds in the crust and is released on faults.

VolcanoDiscovery listed Saturday’s event as a 3.0 in South Gippsland around 2:03pm (GMT+11). This article describes seismic reports; it is not an evacuation alert.
