On Wednesday Disney+ and Hulu handed a series order to a Glee reboot. 20th Television, which made the original, is producing. A series order, not filming, not a premiere date. Dump Deadline.
Ryan Murphy, Ian Brennan and Brad Falchuk created Glee. In July, promoting The Shards, Murphy said young people had found it again and that it might be worth revisiting. In September he said he had finished a script. On Wednesday came the order. Three steps. That is not an episode shot.
Last month Murphy said he had spoken with around ten of the original cast. No names were announced with the order. ABC, part of Disney, wrote on the same Wednesday that the studio had announced a new season, with no cast and no date. Deadline calls it a reboot. Stay with the series order. That is not a cast list.
The show ran on Fox from 2009 to 2015, six seasons, at William McKinley High in Lima, Ohio. It won six Emmys, including for Murphy and Jane Lynch. It now streams on Hulu. Disney said, via Deadline, the songs draw around four million monthly listeners on Spotify. Listeners, not viewers.
Chris Colfer told Bustle earlier this month the show was hard to make and would be hard now, without Naya Rivera, who died in 2020. He added that fans would come after him with pitchforks if he said no. That is not a yes. Cory Monteith died in 2013. Neither is Wednesday’s cast.
Dump Deadline. The rewrite rests on Deadline and Variety.
