Romania’s government on Friday approved a decision backing the country’s bid for another term on the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council, including a traditional meal for about 1,000 people at a reception during the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference (PP-26) in Doha, Qatar (9–27 November 2026), Digi24 reports, citing News.ro.

Former prime minister Ilie Bolojan had pulled the draft from the agenda of the last cabinet meeting he chaired. ANCOM vice-president Pavel Popescu accused him of sabotaging a year of diplomatic work; in reply, Ioana Dogioiu, former spokesperson for the Bolojan government, said Popescu “lies as he breathes” and wanted funding for a 1,000-person “party.”

According to the government statement, campaign activities will be run by the ANCOM delegation set up to promote Romania’s candidacy. Representatives of other public institutions, including Parliament, may join the delegation.

The decision also authorises event-organisation costs under ITU rules and customs, including the traditional reception meal. Funding comes from ANCOM’s 2026 revenue-and-expenditure budget.

The ITU is the UN specialised agency for communications and information technology, founded in 1865; it has 194 member states and more than 1,000 private-sector and academic members.

The political clash remains in the background of the approval: Popescu spoke of a “false reality” and visceral hostility toward regulators; Dogioiu contrasted the project with funding for Dacian Cioloș’s candidacy at the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie, which she said was adopted on 11 September, not at Bolojan’s final meeting.
