Greenpeace Ukraine has identified and tracked seven tankers carrying about 288,000 tonnes of diesel from Russia to the United States, Mediafax reports, citing the Kyiv Independent. The group published the data on 29 October after US President Donald Trump temporarily eased sanctions that had restricted Russian oil exports.

The ships are crossing the Atlantic; one is nearing the US East Coast. Arrival is expected in early November, with no destination ports confirmed publicly. Greenpeace also released an interactive map to follow their movement.

According to the organisation, the vessels are Taurus, Pvt Azura, Agioi Fanendes, Talisman, Leruo, Iblea and Primorye. Three of them — Talisman, Leruo and Primorye — appear on sanctions lists and are linked to Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet” used to move oil products around international restrictions.

Talisman has been under US sanctions since January 2025, Greenpeace Ukraine and a Ukrainian war-sanctions portal say. Polina Kolodiazhna of Greenpeace Ukraine warned that revenue from such cargoes can help fund the war against Ukraine and criticised the return of Russian fuel trade.

On 9 October Trump said he would temporarily allow Russian diesel sales into the American market amid energy-price pressure amplified by the war with Iran. The move drew criticism from Ukraine, allies and US politicians: Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal on 28 October told a shipping firm to turn the ships around, citing a 2022 law banning Russian oil imports.

New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill said on 29 October she was reviewing ways to keep Russian tankers out of state ports. Separately, on 28 September Vladimir Putin signed a decree restricting access to data on Russian refineries and energy exports.
