On Saturday, 19 September 2026, communities in more than 100 countries are expected to join the International Coastal Cleanup, the annual effort coordinated by Ocean Conservancy. In California the same date is known as Coastal Cleanup Day. A 14 September advisory announces a flagship event at Alamitos Beach in Long Beach, from 09:00 to 12:00 local time, with free registration. That is a visible example, not the only point on the map: cleanups take place on beaches, riverbanks and lakeshores because litter discarded inland can still reach the sea.

Ocean Conservancy estimates that since the first edition in 1986 almost 20 million volunteers have removed more than 400 million pounds of trash. Recording collected objects remains central: packaging, bottle caps, cigarette filters, fishing gear. The data help researchers and authorities see what turns up often and assess the effect of policies such as bag restrictions. A cleanup removes the visible effect; prevention — fewer single-use products, better collection, producer-responsibility schemes — tackles the source.

Organisers recommend gloves, suitable footwear and local safety rules. Sharp objects or unknown substances should not be handled without trained staff. In some places materials are provided; in others volunteers bring their own. The cleanup map and reporting apps, including Clean Swell, are the starting point for anyone who wants to join an existing team or organise a collection point.

The Long Beach advisory links the cleanup to the Protect Where We Play initiative and to sites that will host Olympic and Paralympic events in 2028. Athletes’ messages do not replace fieldwork in hundreds of other communities. For readers in Europe, including Romania, 19 September is a reason to look for local river and shoreline actions, not to treat the problem as a solely American event.
