The International Day of Older Persons is observed each year on 1 October. The UN theme for 2026 is “The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives”: how health, social protection, work and care adapt to longer lives.

The event at UN Headquarters in New York, organised by UNDESA with the NGO Committee on Ageing, is listed for 8 October, not 1 October. The observance date remains 1 October; the New York meeting is a separate programme, with registration.

Population ageing touches health systems, pensions, housing, transport and the labour market. Policy must meet support needs without reducing older people to an image of dependency. Age-based discrimination can block access to services, jobs and public life.

Population statistics are used with the year, territory and the body that publishes them. This account does not invent a Romanian calendar of ceremonies.

Accessible communities, action against isolation and support for carers are about autonomy, not paternalism. The theme is taken from the UN source, not from commercial slogans.

The source is the UNDESA UNIDOP 2026 page, together with the UN observance on 1 October. No planetary “average older person”.
