Anton Källberg took European singles silver on Sunday in Ljubljana. France’s Félix Lebrun won the final 4–3 (7–11, 11–9, 13–11, 8–11, 9–11, 11–6, 11–1) after the Swede had led 3–2 in games. ETTU puts the match at Arena Stožice. Källberg, 29, said silver hurts: you want gold, and the gap between the two metals is large.
SVT’s Saturday track was the quarter-final against Norway’s Borgar Haug. Källberg won that 4–2 (11–7, 11–3, 7–11, 11–9, 4–11, 11–4). Haug, ranked 213, had knocked out Truls Möregårdh on Friday. The Swede said they are close friends, that they have trained together, and that he would have accepted losing to him. The singles medal was already booked by reaching the semi-final.
On Sunday, in the last four, he beat Germany’s Dang Qiu, world No. 11 and a club-mate at Borussia Düsseldorf, also 4–2 (11–9, 9–11, 9–11, 11–8, 11–5, 11–4). SVT notes four straight losses to him before these championships. J-O Waldner, on air: a Källberg of a year ago would not have turned those games.
In the final Källberg started better, 11–7. Lebrun took the next two, 11–9 and 13–11. The Swede came back, 11–8 and 11–9, and stood one game from Sweden’s first European men’s singles title since Peter Karlsson in Bremen in 2000 — a frame Svenska Dagbladet supplies, not a set-by-set archive we have re-scored.
At 3–2 Lebrun changed the plan. He told his coach the serve was not carrying the tactic; he played more freely. He took the sixth game 11–6 and the seventh 11–1. “I played the best game of my life in the last one,” he said, per ETTU. He is 20, and was top seed. Singles gold sits beside the doubles title he won on Saturday night with his brother Alexis, 3–2 against Källberg and Kristian Karlsson.
Félix follows Alexis, European singles champion in 2024 in Linz. Sunday’s bronze stayed with Léo de Nodrest (France) and Dang Qiu. Källberg leaves Slovenia with two silvers. This is not a semi-final still to play: the championships are closed.
