King Charles III has begun his Caribbean tour by acknowledging the “great suffering of the past” while facing calls for slavery reparations. According to the BBC, the monarch spoke at a youth event in Nassau, Bahamas, at the start of a nine-day visit.
Charles said some of what is best in Bahamian culture today was “born out of darkness” and that it was “only right” to acknowledge historic injustices. He did not, however, issue a formal British apology for the slave trade or offer reparations — a line Buckingham Palace had already aligned with the UK government’s position before the trip.
On arrival the King met Governor General Dame Cynthia A. Pratt and Prime Minister Philip Edward Davis, then inspected a guard of honour. At Clifford Park, where he attended Bahamas independence celebrations as Prince of Wales in 1973, he was greeted by young people; a small group of protesters outside shouted “pay us what you owe us” and demanded the return of artefacts.
The tour covers the Bahamas, Guyana and Antigua and Barbuda and ends at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), where Charles has confirmed leaders will discuss the legacy of slavery. The Palace said the King would not shy away from “colonial legacy”, while also focusing the programme on modern partnerships and the future.
In the Nassau speech the monarch linked the theme to climate and the vulnerability of low-lying Caribbean islands, saying “our world cries out for healing” and urging young people to care for the planet. Next come climate and Junkanoo engagements, then Guyana (environment and biodiversity) and Antigua and Barbuda, where Queen Camilla joins him for CHOGM.
Acknowledging suffering in the speech remains distinct from an official apology or a reparations package. Regional demands for both continue, and the announced UK government position — which the King follows on this visit — is not to offer either.
