The death toll from the Russian attack on Komyshuvakha in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region has risen to 40, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said, with more than 30 people possibly still under the rubble, according to international pickups of the Seznam Zprávy report / Ukrainian official statements.

On the morning of 2 November, Russian forces struck with guided aerial bombs a school used as a humanitarian-aid distribution point. Zelenskyy said nine bombs were dropped: first on people who had come for aid, then on rescuers and police who arrived at the scene.

“As of now, 40 deaths have been reported. Some of the bodies, unfortunately, have not yet been identified. (…) More than 30 people may still be under the rubble,” Zelenskyy wrote.

Search-and-rescue operations have continued for several days under the threat of further strikes. Victims include civilians, police officers and rescue workers. Local authorities declared mourning in the region.

The attack is among the deadliest recent strikes on civilians in the war. The UN human rights mission in Ukraine said the bombing likely violated international law.
